The Latest Plague

Look at the scenes unfolding,

In the streets, in the markets.

An orgy of sickness and death.

Government sanctioned misery,

Is it that much of a mystery?

Worse germ in modern history.

In the age of science,

In the age of technology,

Could all this just be a bunch of nonsense?

Madness in the lines outside the stores.

Swear they'll never have enough,

Always seems they're needing more.

Isn't this apocalypse such a fucking bore?

Invisible enemy sent here to kill us,

24 hour news coverage meant to thrill us.

You ever feel that intense surveillance?

Cameras on every sign and every pole,

Is there any privacy for you?

Because I know they've stolen mine,

It seems their eyes are always draped upon you.

Are the numbers they're giving you really true?

You know lately I'm having trouble breathing,

It's even worse when I started eating

Could this be the latest plague? 

The information seems awfully vague,

When the looting and riots start,

You'll see more around in certain parts,

Eat the rich, to feed the poor.

The latest plague has got plenty more in store.

      It was a quarter passed 9 am, my wife and I had just exited the PATH train from our home in downtown Jersey City, to Penn Station in Newark, NJ. Upon exiting the West end of the transit hub I bared witness to a fifty yard line of dusty blankets, shopping carts, sleeping bags, the occasional tent and lastly the wrinkled faces freezing in the January air. The Forgotten Opioid Crisis and It's Lasting Effects On America

    The news cycles were all over the Opioid Epidemic, it was mid-winter 2019, the deaths continued to pile up from sea to shining sea. The Midwest was being hit especially hard. Dayton, Ohio, a city of only 140,343 (worldpopulationreview.com) was pummeled by the death drug to the tune of 378 fatal overdoses in 2017 alone, according to numbers compiled by americanprogress.org. The figures did drop significantly over the next two years, thanks to the media spotlight being shined on this small, previously insignificant Ohio enclave. By January 2020, covid-19 arrived on our shores. The death toll from the coronavirus began to rise, by late February Americans were forced inside and another epidemic replacing the opioid crisis seemed complete. The Decade of Catastrophe and War in Syria: Part II: Foreign Intervention, Kurdish Militias and the Fall of the Caliphate

         The Islamic State reached it's territorial peak in the fall of 2014, ISIS controlled 41,000 square miles in Iraq and by the end of 2014 ISIS had taken over a third of Syria (according to wilsoncenter.org). The speed at which the outlaw organization was able to conquer such a large amount of territory was a shock to the system, of not just the Middle East, but to the entire international community. Besides ISIS, other Islamic militias began to rise up to challenge the power of Bashar Al Assad and his fading regime. The Al-Nusra Front, Ahar Al-Sham and even a group with the Westernized title as the Free Syrian Army all battled it out with Assad's forces throughout the years from 2010-2015 (syriahr.com).
